Philippians 2:14-18
“Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent,
children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,
among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in
the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am
to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad
and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”

Main Idea
Shine the light of Christ by clinging to Jesus.

So often I get irritated that things aren’t going my way; most of the time that leads to me
fighting to get my way which then typically leads to a wedge between me and whoever is
not doing things my way. Whether that is my spouse not doing the chores the way I want
them done, or not getting a break from my kids, or having to cancel plans because of this
virus, I grumble. I think my way is better than God’s way or the way of people around me
and I start to compete for my will be done. Ew, that’s’ ugly. I look at how God calls me to
be a light and just feel like it’s’ impossible at times.

How can I, how can we be a light in this world?

Paul tells us we can be a light by “holding fast to the word of life.” In John chapter 1,
Jesus is referred to as “the Word” and “in him was life, and the life was the light of men.
The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” Jesus is the word
of life. Cling to Jesus. In the moments we are so irritated that things aren’t going our way,
ask Jesus to give you humility like him, who died for those who mistreated him and
prayed, “Thy will be done” not “my will be done.” In the ugly, shameful moments, ask
Jesus to forgive you, then receive the grace that He gives. He is the light, we are not able
to be blameless, innocent, or blemish-free on our own. It is only through Jesus’ sacrifice
that we are children of God. Hold on tight to the words of our Savior, spend time
meditating on His grace and as His Spirit transforms you, you will begin to look more and more like the light.

What is something you are grumbling about right now? Take some time to come to Jesus
with your disappointments and surrender to Him in prayer by asking “Thy will be done.”
